Shining a Light on the Best and Brightest: A Q&A with Adrianne Court, Transplace’s Chief Human Resource Officer
Transplace was recently recognized as one of 2016’s “Best and Brightest Companies to Work For®” in the Dallas/Fort Worth area by the National Association of Business Resources. We recently sat down with Adrianne Court, Chief Human Resource Officer for Transplace, to find out what this award represents to Transplace and what human resource (HR) practices are helping set the company apart.
Q: Can you tell us about the award and why Transplace received it?
A: The Best and Brightest Companies to Work For® competition takes place each year and it recognizes organizations that demonstrate a commitment to excellence in their HR practices as well as employee enrichment.
I’m very proud of our company receiving this award. I think there are a number of reasons why we were honored. It’s an external confirmation of what we already know internally here at Transplace. And that is simply: Our organization lives our core values and leadership principles, which is evidenced by our commitment to meaningful HR practices, and just as important – our investment in the development of our people. We won this award as a direct result of these practices.
Second, we’ve figured out the best ways to engage our employees and instill our core values as represented through all of that we do. At Transplace, it’s not just something that’s displayed on the wall, we make sure it’s overt in our presentations and communications and covert in our recognition programs and corporate goals, which all tie back to our core values.
Third, I think something that really sets Transplace apart is our annual corporate goals. This includes an annual commitment of a minimum of 24 hours of professional development for each and every employee of Transplace. Professional development can include internal courses with an instructor, obtaining professional certifications or internal certifications (i.e. in supply chain or PowerPoint), spending time in our learning portal that includes 300+ courses and tuition reinforcement.
And finally, our recognition programs such as our Challenge Coins help reinforce the behaviors and employees who follow our core values and leadership principles that are powering Transplace in the right direction. It’s exciting and rewarding to be a part of it.
Q: How do Transplace customers benefit?
A: By attracting and maintaining top talent we’re able to continue to grow and provide our customers with outstanding transportation management services and logistics solutions. We believe in making an upfront investment in talent acquisition that pays off in multiples. For example, 48% of our new hires are employee referrals, and that’s with no referral bonus. We want referrals because Transplace is a great place to work, and that percentage referral rate means we’re doing something right!
In addition, it’s about who you work for, who your manager is that matters at the end of the day. How do we know? By being the example of our leadership principles and our core values, which is revealed as the #1 score on our employee satisfaction survey as: “my manager treats me with dignity and respect.” I have to tell you, this is an “HR fantasy dream.” This means our customers and the services we provide aren’t disrupted by turnover.
And we’ve had some customers interested in a few of our HR practices such as our new grad professional development program (PDP) and recruiting processes so we’ve helped them to adopt similar programs of their own and reap the benefit.
