National Truck Driver Appreciation Week 2016: Thank You Truck Drivers

By: Tom Sanderson, CEO and Frank McGuigan, President & Chief Operating Officer, Transplace

This week, September 12th-16th, is National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, and we wanted to take some time to say “thank you” to all of the hardworking truckers on the road. Truck drivers play a huge role in our everyday life and our country’s economy, and they deserve our deepest respect and gratitude.

To all professional truck drivers: thank you for all of the long hours you put in. These dedicated individuals haul 9.2 billion tons of freight annually to feed us, shelter us, and keep this economy rolling. Hauling that much freight requires nearly 3 million heavy-duty Class 8 trucks and 3.5 million drivers. And these suppliers of capacity are the backbone of transportation here in the United States. Over 80% of communities in the U.S. today depend solely on trucking for delivery of their goods and commodities. These dedicated drivers drove over 279 billion miles in 2014, which is more than double that of 25 years ago.

We also want to recognize truck drivers for their incredible record of safety on our highways. For every 100 million miles driven by truck drivers, incredibly only 1.44 fatalities have occurred. Driving a truck is truly a hard job, and we’re always trying to work with shippers to help make that job just a little bit easier and support our country’s drivers.

This week means a lot to us and we’ll be highlighting it all week here on Logistically Speaking to help celebrate truck drivers and showcase our appreciation in a number of ways. Stay tuned for much more to come, and be sure to share your thanks with a truck driver this week.
