    Trends in Transportation

    - by Transplace

While no two years are exactly alike, freight transportation in 2015 has been dramatically different than 2014. We aren’t seeing capacity shortages on a broad basis this year like we did in 2014, and while we expect capacity to modestly tighten once peak shipping season kicks in, we do not expect any significant capacity shortages this fall. Last year’s first quarter saw extreme weather issues, and though this year weather conditions weren’t quite as severe, we had to deal with the West Coast port challenges that also impacted domestic transportation. Overall, we had a much better start to 2015 due to more reasonable capacity demand balance.

How Carriers Are Paving the Way for Truck Drivers

    - by Transplace

It’s no secret that capacity is a topic that will remain top of mind for both shippers and carriers in the near future. And in honor of Truck Driver Appreciation Week, we’d like to explore what carriers are doing to provide truck drivers with an efficient and quality experience throughout their routes, especially in light of recent capacity and driver shortages. During the 2015 Transplace Shipper Symposium, we spoke with a number of carrier management executives in truckload, less-than-truckload (LTL) and intermodal transportation modes to hear their outlook on planning for capacity.

Real Talk: The Capacity Crunch and What You Can Do About It

    - by Transplace

Capacity constraints can have a significant impact on a company’s transportation and logistics activities. While 2015 is faring better than last year, we all know it can be fleeting. The Path to Preferred Shipper Status

    - by Transplace

With capacity tightening and shippers finding it increasingly harder to secure freight, many are looking for ways to become a preferred shipper. In the past, shippers have had more leverage due to an abundance of capacity being available in the market, and carriers had to compromise – doing anything to get loads. But now, due to factors such as changes to industry regulations and the lack of available drivers causing a tightening of capacity, carriers are being more selective and strategic about what shippers they work with – even going so far as to giving shippers a scorecard. According to Ben Cubitt, senior vice president of engineering and consulting for Transplace, carriers are scoring shippers on a number of factors including:

    Shipper Symposium 2014 – Day 3 Recap

    - by Transplace

The final day did not disappoint as this year’s Shipper Symposium came to a close.  Attendees filed into the main ballroom in anticipation of hearing from speakers Economist Paul Bingham and former President of Mexico Vicente Fox in addition to hearing thoughts from the “NAFTA @ 20” panel.

But it wouldn’t be a Shipper Symposium if there wasn’t some fun and humor to get our day started! First up was Kecia Gray, Vice President, Marketing & Corporate Communications, who addressed everyone with a short, but very interactive welcome. From highlighting details of how far the event has come over the last 12 years to showing off Shipper Symposium attendee selfies, Kecia thanked all the sponsors, attendees and especially her teams for helping make the Signature Event better and better with each following year.

The 12-Step Program to Become a Shipper of Choice

    - by Transplace

As we gear up for this year’s 12th Annual Shipper Symposium, we think back to the great speakers we’ve had over the last decade  – from Marci Rossell to T. Boone Pickens and many, many more in between. All have been accomplished and storied speakers to have graced the main stage of our signature event.

Most recently, 2013 speaker Thomas Albrecht from BB&T Capital Markets, shared great insight into what shippers can do to win favor from their carrier base and strengthen these critical relationships. We’ve captured that insight and turned it into 12 steps that shippers can take to become a preferred partner for carriers. Read on to find out what it takes to get to attain preferred partner status.
