Key Takeaways from the 2019 Transplace Carrier Advisory Board Meeting

    - by Transplace

One of the great things about an advisory board, one where you have encouraged the participants to be open and communicate freely, is that you can get the scoop on the real issues facing an industry. This was the case at our recent Transplace Carrier Advisory Board, held in conjunction with the 2019 Transplace Carrier Symposium. While the symposium is all about education and honoring our 32,000+ carriers, the advisory board is by design a much smaller venue to allow more informal feedback. Our goal for talking with a small group of about 20 select carriers is to help us grow and learn how to be better partners. Throughout the meeting, there were several consistent themes, a few which I will share below. .

In addition, attendees had an opportunity to share new insights and discuss ways to improve shipper-carrier relationships through “preferred shipper” and “preferred carrier” initiatives, and how to leverage technology innovations to improve efficiency and real-time freight visibility.

RILA is a great place for diverse retail supply chain professionals to gather, exchange ideas and discuss all things logistics. It’s also one of the most focused industry events that I’ve attended — honing in on retail industry logistics and supply chain matters.

It’s no secret that capacity is a topic that will remain top of mind for both shippers and carriers in the near future. During the 2015 Transplace Shipper Symposium, we spoke with a number of carrier management executives in truckload, less-than-truckload (LTL) and intermodal transportation modes to hear their outlook on planning for capacity.

This regulatory activity, including HOS adjustments and the electronic log mandate, has very altruistic intentions regarding safety and environmental improvements. However, it has also had a direct impact on the costs and productivity of motor carriers which has translated into a tightening of available capacity for shippers.

The Path to Preferred Shipper Status

    - by Transplace

With capacity tightening and shippers finding it increasingly harder to secure freight, many are looking for ways to become a preferred shipper. In the past, shippers have had more leverage due to an abundance of capacity being available in the market, and carriers had to compromise – doing anything to get loads. But now, due to factors such as changes to industry regulations and the lack of available drivers causing a tightening of capacity, carriers are being more selective and strategic about what shippers they work with – even going so far as to giving shippers a scorecard. According to Ben Cubitt, senior vice president of engineering and consulting for Transplace, carriers are scoring shippers on a number of factors including:
